What are the benefits of Lavender essential oil?

Updated: Jul 29, 2021

The botanical name for the Lavender essential oil we use in our scented candles at Cotswold Pure Botanicals is Lavandula angustifolia. The scent comes from the beautiful, purple flower head which we all know and love. It's heady aroma screams summer and reminds me of hot, sunny days or the South of France. Its scent could be described as sweet, floral, herbaceous with balsamic-woody undertones. Bliss!

So, as one of the most well know and most used essential oils what are the main benefits of Lavender essential oil?

The main benefits of Lavender essential oil:

Lavender essential oil can improve sleep

Here at Cotswold Pure we make a lovely sleep product, which you too could make at home. Simply take a few drops of Lavender essential oil and blend with a carrier such as almond oil or apricot kernel oil. Pop into a rollerball and roll onto your pulse points at bedtime. It's a nice ritual and a powerful tool to help you settle down for the night. Our Pure Sleep Rollerball can be found here.

Lavender essential oil can relieve pain

Several studies have found that lavender oil helps as a natural painkiller. Simply rubbing lavender into the area of concern can reduce inflammation and pain intensity.

Lavender essential oil reduces stress and anxiety

Lavender is well known for its calming qualities. Try blending a few drops of Lavender essential oil, a teaspoon of honey and a teaspoon of milk and adding it to your bath water. The perfect way to reduce stress and anxiety. Light a candle while you are in there too.

Lavender essential oil helps the wonderful brain to function

Research has shown that lavender oil could help with Alzheimer’s disease. Studies conducted on rats show that inhaling Lavender essential oil vapour can help to prevent brain oxidative stress and improve cognitive impairment. Rub Lavender essential oil onto the temples.

Lavender essential oil has powerful antioxidants

Lavender essential oil is a natural antioxidant that works to prevent and reverse disease. A 2013 study published in Phytomedicine found that lavender oil increased the activity of the body’s most powerful antioxidants — glutathione, catalase and SOD.

Lavender essential oil can help with headaches

According to a study published in European Neurology, people struggling with migraine headaches saw a significant reduction in pain when they inhaled lavender oil for 15 minutes. The difference between the control group and lavender oil treatment group was statistically significant. Of the 129 headache attack cases, 92 responded entirely or partially to lavender. You can try inhaling Lavender essential oil directly from the bottle.
