Are candles vegan?

Not all candles are created equally. There are millions of different candles available for you to buy for your home. Some of the most popular are made with paraffin. Paraffin candles are derived from fossil fuels so they are not great for the environment and can pollute your home when you burn them. Technically though, they are vegan.

Beeswax candles are another popular type of candle but as the name suggests the wax comes from the hive of bees. It is harvested by the beekeeper smoking out the bees so the wax can be collected. The wax is then melted down and turned into candles. So although it can be lovely to work with and smells quite soothing, it's not a vegan option.

Soy wax candles are vegan. Soy wax is the wax we use in our candles at Cotswold Pure.  Soy wax is a natural product which comes from the soya bean.  Soya grows all over the world and is very popular in vegetarian and vegan cookery.  Here at Cotswold Pure, we think it's a great wax for candle making.  It is natural, renewable and sustainable, which is what we want to hear more about concerning our beautiful world.  Soy wax is fragrance free and effective to work with in terms of candle making.  The end result is a candle that burns for a long time but at a lower temperature than paraffin candles. The scent tends to waft across the room instead of overpowering.

You may see candles labelled mineral wax. This is a waxy mineral that is a mixture of hydrocarbons and occurs in association with petroleum. This is vegan, but it not environmentally friendly as it is comes from fossil fuel and can create indoor air pollution which is harmful to our health.
